Keeping busy!

We have been very busy over the last few weeks. On October 3rd we had a guest visitor named Brenda from Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement (JA) is a program where people from the business world come into the classroom and teach the children about the community. She spent the whole day with us. They were able to use fake money to pay taxes, learned about the government, learned the difference between an assembly line vs. unit production, and much more about the community. It was a blast! To see more pictures click on the clas pictures link.

We have also been learning the difference between living and non-living things in science. Ask your child to tell you 3 differences. I bet they will know!

In writing we have been working on descriptive writing. Adding many details and "juicy" words to our writing pieces. We got to taste and describe Hershey Kisses and apples. In the pictures below, the children were put into groups. They had to taste a snack item such as potato chips, pretzels, etc. and then describe what they tasted using descriptive words. The class was to guess what snack they had based on their descriptions. It was very fun activity. Now we are writing about fall. They have been working really hard. I plan to hang their final copies in the hallway to display. Come by and see them if you get a chance.

Conferences and Mrs. Stoleson Visits

We had a very special visitor on Tuesday. Mrs. Stoleson brought her new baby girl, Emma Ann, to visit with the kids. They were so excited. We sure do miss having her around here. And Emma was so cute!

Also, please check your child's homework folder this week for your conference confirmations. I look forward to talking to all of you.

Welcome Back!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a nice break. Well, it is now back to business and I have few things to update you on:

* Look in your child's Thursday folder this week for a new book order. I will send home a Scholastic book order each quarter. When you purchase books for your child it helps out the classroom at the same time. For every dollar you spend, we receive free books for the classroom library. It is a great way to contribute to the class. Books also make great holiday gifts. If you want to purchase books for the holidays, let me know and I will keep them hidden. *wink * wink * Book orders for this quarter are due next Friday, October 10th.

* Also, keep an eye out in your child's homework folder for a parent/teacher conference sign-up sheet. We will have conferences in the next few weeks and report cards will follow shortly. I will send home more information soon.

* Our class Fall party will be on Friday, October 24th from 2:00-2:45. Look for more information to come in your child's Thursday folder. Also, don't forget to attend the Monster Mash that same evening. If you have never attended you're missing out! It is great fun to be had by all!
